Sport

Athletics provides the opportunity for our student athletes to participate in track and field competitions throughout Term Two and also provides Cross Country and Aquathon competitions during the first two terms.

Extra-Curricular training takes part throughout Term Two with sessions scheduled for every lunchtime throughout the week, which cover every discipline.

Competitions include team events such as the ‘Fab 5’, Team DASSA Teams and Individual Championships. Additionally, there are three competitions for both Aquathon and Cross Country for our endurance athletes to participate in. Cross Country and Aquathon takes place over both term 1 and 2 with weekly training for both events. There are individual, team and relay events for each sport.

Basketball is a major team sport at DC, with a high participation rate with both boys and girls. Every age group fields A and B team, whilst C teams have now started to cater for the increased interest in the sport.

Our Under 16 and 19 teams compete in the DASSA leagues in Term One and compete in domestic competitions. Following on from their outstanding success in the World School Games in 2023, our Under 19 Boys and girls will travel to Singapore in October 2024 for their inaugural Asia tour.

Our Under 12 and 14 teams compete in DASSA leagues during Term Three, whilst pre-season training begins in the second half of Term Two. Basketball is now one of the major participation sports at the college and as students progress through the school there will be S&C support for our players and multiple training sessions each week. As we grow from strength to strength

Cricket continues to develop against a strong fixture list of domestic teams and frequent overseas schools.

The three main Cricket squads play from mid-October until the end of the Spring Term, whilst the Under 13 and 15s also play ‘Tapeball’ during the summer term.

DC has an enviable record against both local teams and schools that tour from overseas. The Under 15 squad play in the annual Root Cup whilst the Under 19 team play in the annual U19 ARCH trophy that takes place in March, which attracts schools from the UK and South Africa.

Boys football has the highest participation rate of any sport within the College and is played throughout all Year groups during the first term.

The College runs teams at U12, U13, U14, U16 and U19 for the DASSA Leagues in Term One and squads compete in a Cup competition in Term Two.

Due to the tremendous interest in football we have A, B and C squads providing participation opportunities for all students to compete at the level which is appropriate to them.

Our ECA partner, Empire Football Academy assist with all aspects of coaching during both curriculum and extra-curricular time.

Girls’ football 

At Dubai College, the girls football programme has experienced immense growth. We have 150 girls representing the school on a weekly basis. The U12, 13 & 14 play 7-a-side matches. The U16 and U19 girls progress onto 9-a-side and 11-a-side. The football season kicks off in Term 1, with weekly fixtures for all age groups in the DASSA leagues. The DASSA Cup starts in the new year along with the BSAK 7’s tournament in Abu Dhabi. The girls finish the season with the DC 7’s tournament in February. We work alongside Empire Football Club, who support the ECA programme for boys and girls.

Netball is flourishing at Dubai College with over 250 girls regularly playing and training.  The season begins with pre-season in August, followed by regular training for all age groups; early mornings, lunchtimes and after school sessions as well as individual technical sessions prepare our girls for the challenges of major competitions later in the year. Competitions in Term 1 include the BSAK 7’s, DC7's and the Emirates Airline Dubai 7's Open Youth and Youth Sevens tournaments as well as touring team fixtures in October half term.  Term 2 sees teams of all ages and abilities competing in the DASSA Leagues and tournaments as well as the International DC tournament and the DC10's tournament in February.  The U13, U15 and U17 teams compete in the UK World Schools Games in June and overseas tours are planned every two years with our next one being New Zealand in the Summer of 2025. 

Netball is open to all, both recreational and elite, and our high performing players are given extra opportunities to attend one to one technical sessions in their Directed Study lessons.  Strength and Conditioning plays a big part in the DC netballer's schedule and all girls are encouraged to get fitter, faster and stronger through a regular training programme.  Lots of DC girls regularly play in the various leagues around Dubai and we have DC reps in both the U17, U21 and Open UAE teams who compete in the European Championships annually and World Cup qualifiers (U21). 

Netball in Dubai is growing fast, and the ambition of DC is to ensure that there is a strong and accessible talent pathway, giving everyone the opportunity to reach their potential and be the best they can be.  September 2020 saw the opening of the new SPACE double court sports hall with sprung floor and state of the art gym facility (16 lifting platforms, CV area, spin rooms, fitness suites) as well as the appointment of a full time Director of Netball (Lucia Sdao) and Head of Sports Performance (Justin Walsh), all examples of DC's investment in seeing netball at the school step up.   2022 also saw the appointment of a Netball Performance Coach to support the squads (Keneiloe Kgasi).

The DC Netball family encompasses talented players, quality coaches, supportive parents and generous sponsors, all supporting a comprehensive and ambitious netball programme, all working together to enable our DC netballers to be the best they can be, both on and off court.

The educational programme of any top school should reflect a balance between academic, cultural, environmental, and sporting activities. In this respect Dubai College endeavours to remain at the cutting edge of each pursuit. Dubai College offers a vibrant rugby programme providing students of various levels with the perfect Rugby training programme according to their age and experience. The rugby programme allows athletes to improve their rugby and individual skills with the best coaches in a safe, enjoyable, and stimulating environment. We are fortunate to enjoy some of the finest sporting facilities in the UAE with two rugby pitches and a state-of-the-art gym facility - 16 lifting platforms, CV area, spin rooms, fitness suites as well as the appointment of a full time Head of Sports Performance - Justin Walsh.

Competitions:

Seven a side rugby is played in Term 1,  with our U12s, 13s, 14, 16s and 19s. They will play in the BSAK 7s, the DC 7s and the DESC 7s tournaments. Our U19 A and B team boys will play in the first week of December in the prestigious Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7s tournament. What an unbelievable experience representing your school in front of 30 000 spectators.  Our U19 boys will also take part in the world schools rugby festival during December playing against some of the strongest schools from South Africa, New Zealand and the UK. 

DC Rugby squads will be training, playing or touring during October. The U19 boys will be traveling to Singapore to play in the Singapore SCC tournament and our younger age groups will play fixtures against Mill Hill, Trinity College, Ysgol Gwyr. The U12 and 13 boys will travel to Al Ain in October for a weekend camp, where the coaches will focus on the following:  

• Developing a culture that drives high performance at the individual and team 

• Supporting players one to one, helping them consistently deliver their best performance under pressure 

• Facilitating the development and maintenance of a high challenge/high support system 

• Structure plus game appreciation  

Term two: We will start our XV a-side season entering the DASSA leagues in Under 12, 13, 14, 16 & 19 level. 
During term two the DC teams will also play in the DESC 10s, DC 10s and the DASSA League from January till end of March. 

Tours:

The U/13, U/16 and U19 boys will be attending the National Schools 7s tournament at Rosslyn Park. The biggest school tournament in the world.

Rugby Training times: Every team will have 3 pitch sessions and a minimum of 2 S&C sessions during the week. We will also offer one to one technical sessions in their Directed Study lessons for players to focus on skill development in their individual positions on the team.

Dubai College girls' rugby has been thriving this year with a massive increase in the number of participations. This year was special for our rugby programme as we progressed from U12 Rippa, U14 Rippa to U16 contact and U19 contact. Our goal is to provide and create opportunities for every young girl in Dubai College who show interest to play rugby with good, qualified coaches. It was a fantastic start and as a result our numbers jumped from 76 girls to 90 girls playing in 2024. We are now offering U12 Girls Rippa Rugby, U14 Girls Rippa and contact, U16 Girls contact and U19 girls contact.  

We started with pre-season training with our junior girls twice a week in the beginning of Term 1, and our U18girls started their pre-season with Half Term 3 day training camp in October with the boys. The U/13 and U/15 girls train by doing two sessions a week with 1 S&C session and 1 pitch session this year. We are going to increase to four sessions a week next school year as more focus will be on Strength and conditioning side of their fitness and skills development. 

Overall was a fantastic season for the girls, the younger age groups participating outstandingly in the DASSA League, DC 7s, JESS Tournament and DESC 10s. They have built a good foundation for DC girls rugby for further development in the next few years. 

The U18 girls set the precedent and standard for UAE Rugby by being the  first UAE representatives to travel to the prestigious Rosslyn Park 7s tournament in London, 2022. Our DC Team pushed the top schools in the UK to their limits showing off our skills, fitness, and game play knowledge by losing out narrowly in the semi-finals. 

Having won the Emirates Airline Dubai 7s in 2022 and then made the final again in 2023, our aim is to now be a consistent force of high quality girls rugby within the UAE.

In the 2020-21 school year we unveiled our state-of-the-art Fitness Suite, which boasts 16 lifting platforms, 26-station cardiovascular area, circuit area as well as spinning and yoga studios. 

The Dubai College Strength and conditioning programme has been designed to introduce all students to a wide range of functional training, both resistance and body weight, in order to help them achieve their physical and sporting potential while at Dubai College, but also in their futures. 

For the high performing athletes, bespoke programmes are created to work alongside their sport training sessions so that we can increase attributes such as strength, power, and endurance with the overall aim of increasing personal and team performance.

Swimming at Dubai College is one of highest performance sports, but also highly inclusive with significant depth in our squads. Throughout the year every student at DC will represent their House in our annual competitions, and we also enter the Dubai-affiliated league with competitions throughout Term 1 and Championships in Term 2. In partnership with Speedo Swim Squads UAE, we promote swimming through our curriculum and extracurricular program. This ensures expertise in coaching on poolside. 

Our 'A' squad competes in the top division of the DASSA Swim League and has an enviable tradition of success. The B squad is regularly ranked as the highest B squad in Dubai. Among our squads we have 4 current National champions and representatives. Our school records and representational achievements at the regional and international levels speak volumes about the exceptional standard of performance our swimmers produce. Any student who wishes to be stretched and challenged in the pool will certainly experience that at DC, and the pathway to elite sport is clear with our swimming partner, Speedo Swim Squads UAE.

Tennis is the newest and fastest growing addition to the College’s extra-curricular sports programme. 

Training takes place on Monday lunchtime, along with a longer two hour sessions on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons. For 2024/25, there will be an additional evening session for Intermediate match play. The sessions are co-led by senior student coaches, providing leadership opportunities for our older athletes. 

Our squads participate in all DASSA tournaments and have enjoyed considerable success in a very short space of time.
