Year 7 Frequently Asked Questions
What is the format of the entrance assessment?
We intend to hold the entrance assessment at Dubai College on Saturday 13th November 2021.
All students will be assessed in English, Mathematics and a cognitive ability test.
This will be a choice of extended writing tasks; applicants must choose one. They will have 45 minutes to write about the task they choose and will be encouraged to produce as much as possible in the time available. They will be rewarded for interesting, well-structured and well-expressed content. Good punctuation, spelling and grammar will be, as always, important. This will be a test of their writing skills and does not require teaching of specific approaches or strategies.
45 minutes: Upper Key Stage 2 Mathematics skills
There is one Mathematics paper. The only equipment required is a pen, pencil and ruler. Calculators are not permitted.
Cognitive Ability Testing
In line with many selective independent schools in the UK, Cognitive Ability Testing forms part of our entrance assessment process. This enables us to assess the students’ reasoning ability in a standardised test. The total duration of the Cognitive Ability Testing is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes including scheduled breaks.
Arabic A will also be assessed for those students who are registered with an Arab nationality (as per the nationality on the Emirates ID card) or who are studying Arabic A voluntarily in their primary school and wish to continue to study Arabic A at secondary school. The Arabic A assessment will last 45 minutes and will assess students' written and spoken Arabic.
Students who hold an Arab passport and are currently attending school outside the UAE must contact the Registrar.
Please note: to ensure fairness for all applicants, unfortunately we will be unable to respond to individual requests for further information on our entrance assessment. We would kindly request that staff members are not asked for more details.
What else will be considered as part of the entrance process?
In addition to the entrance assessment, the following will be considered for 2022 entry:
- End of Year 5 school report – submitted as part of the student’s online application
- Extra-curricular profile – for entry in 2022, extra-curricular information can only be submitted on our standard template which will be available here when applications open. The completed template must be uploaded within your online application and will not be accepted separately. We strongly recommend that families take this opportunity to tell us about their child’s extra-curricular achievements and interests.
- Any SEND or medical information.
Do you issue past or sample assessment papers?
We do not issue sample or past papers. Please attend one of our online ‘Audience with the Headmaster’ information sessions if you wish to learn more about our entrance process.
What are the fees to apply?
For entry to Year 7 in August 2022 a total fee of AED 525 including VAT is payable. This is made up of an application fee (AED 100 + VAT) and an assessment fee (AED 400 + VAT).
Dubai College does not endorse tutoring for our entrance assessment. If you consider that your child requires tutoring to succeed at the entrance assessment, then you may wish to question whether this would be the right school for your child.
Learning Support/Special Educational Needs
Dubai College welcomes applicants from students of determination who would benefit from the academic rigour of our curriculum. Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), whose academic profile fits with the selective entrance criteria, will be supported fully if successful.
Please ensure that you indicate on the online application form if there are any barriers to learning. We may require a recent Educational Psychologist report, and IEP or a letter from the SENCO at your child’s school if you would like to be considered for access arrangements for the entrance assessment.
Please contact Cindy Penney, Head of Student Services and SENCO if you have any questions about SEND at Dubai College.
How many applications do you receive for entry to Year 7?
Dubai College is heavily over-subscribed and in recent years we have received around three applications per place.
How many places are available in Year 7 at Dubai College?
There will be 176 places available for entry to Year 7 in August 2022; there will be 8 forms with 22 students in each form.
What are the school fees at Dubai College?
Please refer to the School Fees webpage for the academic year 2021-2022.
All new students also require a Personal Debenture to the value of AED 25,000. For students offered places in Year 7 in August 2022 following our entrance process, a non-refundable deposit of 10% of the annual tuition fees will be payable by the end of January 2022 to secure your child’s place.
My child applied for entry to Year 7 but was not successful. Can I re-apply for entry to Year 7 next year?
No. Candidates may appear only once for the Year 7 entrance assessment.
