Music

The Music Department at Dubai College is a vibrant and exciting learning community housed in a modern, purpose-built facility featuring a dramatic recital area, a recording studio, sound-proofed instrumental teaching rooms, practice rooms and classrooms.

Our facilities are furnished with over 90 orchestral instruments, semi-professional concert percussion, 20 pianos and 24 Apple Mac computers with music editing and composing capabilities.

The Music Department holds larger-scale concerts in the beautiful Dubai College Auditorium, a versatile space, featuring a large stage with acoustic shields, an orchestra pit, seating for over 900 and a wonderful 7’6’’ grand piano.

With over 50 students taking Music at GCSE, it is also a popular subject at A-Level and we support our students’ musical development through a structured and comprehensive extra-curricular programme.  Students in Year 7 are provided with the opportunity to learn a wind or a brass instrument and take part in the legendary Beginner Band which feeds in to five other bands of varying abilities.

We also have five choirs that regularly win at competitions and various smaller ensembles catering for all ages and abilities. With over 35 activities taking place throughout the week we stage around 40 large scale concerts and smaller lunchtime recitals annually to showcase the successes of these ensembles, and provide platforms for individuals to perform.

We also work collaboratively with the Drama Department, with whom we have produced shows such as FameLittle Shop of Horrors, Guys and DollsWest Side Story, Les Miserables, Evita and Hairspray.

To complement our regular activities we present a range of master classes and workshops inviting professionals from the UK and beyond to come and coach and inspire our students. We regularly have students continuing music at either Music College or University and offer our top students webinar-style lessons from the very best instrumental teachers and mentors in the UK via the internet.

Every year around fifty of our students compete at the prestigious Young Musicians of the Gulf Competition in Bahrain where we consistently achieve success in many of the categories. We won six of the prizes including the overall Young Musician of the Gulf prize.

In the Music Department we aim to provide a Music programme which not only caters for the musical development of all ages and abilities, but also provides a focal point, both within the College and the wider community. We also run community projects such as the Dubai College Community Choir and the Arabian Youth Choir and collaborate with the Dubai Opera Festival Chorus and Expo 2022.
