In compliance with the recently published, Dubai Inclusive Education Policy Framework 2017 Dubai College is strongly committed to inclusive education promoting highly inclusive ethos. We welcome students with varied special educational needs and disabilities. We actively seek to empower and maximize the participation and integration of Students of Determination and work to ensure equal opportunities for our students of determination. In accordance with the Federal Law No (29) of 2006 & Law no (2) of 2014 governing Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the Emirate of Dubai, Dubai College, provides appropriate provisions and curriculum modifications of all students of determination thereby ensuring complete educational and social inclusion. 

Dubai College is strongly committed to inclusive education across all year groups; this provision includes one in which the teaching, learning, achievements, attitudes and well-being of all the students who gain admission to Dubai College matter – including those identified as having additional needs. The College is also committed to recognizing the potential of all students and giving them access to enrichment activities. We fully support the inclusive aims of the Government of Dubai ‘My Community’ initiative launched in 2013, which seeks to ensure persons (and children) with disabilities can participate in education, recreation, arts, sports and culture. Our aim is to know individuals well to help them reach their full potential. We do this through careful personalisation of the curriculum opportunities offered and support programmes that may be required. We want to develop each student as a whole person with the skills and competencies necessary for his or her future life roles. 

In line with the school’s Admissions Policy, individuals will be considered with reference to their needs, resources and the school’s ability to meet those needs. The school will strive to provide appropriate support for students with a range of special educational needs and disabilities. The school will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate students with SEND during entry tests. A current report written by an Educational Psychologist or Specialist teacher will be required to put appropriate arrangements in place, and any access arrangements will be based on the student’s usual way of working.

What makes a good teacher at Dubai College?

The teachers at DC are good because they come from such a range of professional backgrounds, and have worked in schools and businesses all over the world. They are inspirational because of their experience.

What are you trying to encourage and instil into your students?

To be kind- both to themselves and others.

In your opinion, what makes Dubai College special?

DC is special because it gives able young people with barriers to learning the chance to excel.

Who or what inspires you?

The determination to succeed inspires me. I’m updating these questions during online learning 2020, and the motivation, grit and determination to succeed among the young people I teach has kept me motivated to do better.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.

When I was a teenager growing up on the Isle of Wight, my family were featured on the BBCTV programme ‘Ground Force’ to adapt our garden to be more accessible for my little brother who is a wheelchair user.

Eddie Diver, HLTA

Coming from a background in health and social care, I have supported both young adults and children with additional needs for a number of years. In 2015, I moved to Dubai with my wife, who is a teacher of Mathematics at Dubai College. We have settled well here and have a three year old son and another on the way. I consider myself an advocate for students of determination and I get great satisfaction from supporting young people and helping them to achieve their goals.  It’s rewarding in the sense that by removing potential barriers to learning and finding innovative person centred approaches, I can help guide students to realise their full potential and have a happy life at school.

What makes a good teacher at Dubai College?

At Dubai College, we are blessed with so many innovative and experienced teachers who all possess a high quality skill set that guides and inspires our students to achieve academic excellence. That skill set includes leadership, active listening, mentoring, communicating, creativity and resilience among many others. This helps create a climate where a passion for collaborative learning is promoted throughout the school.

What are you trying to encourage and instil in your students?

The students are all encouraged to embrace the four pillars or values of Dubai College – Academic, Creativity, Philanthropic and Sporting. This helps to develop well rounded young adults by the time they leave Sixth Form. Personally, I encourage the students I support to develop their organisational skills and executive functioning on a daily basis. I encourage confidence and self-belief based on a strong work ethic. This helps students achieve their goals and prepares them well for life after secondary school.

In your opinion, what makes Dubai College special?

Both students and staff are friendly and respectful. This makes for an excellent atmosphere around the campus. The achievements of the students in various fields are amazing and this happens year in, year out. I admire the passion and commitment of the teachers and staff. I enjoy meeting with the students, teachers and parents and have many happy memories already in only my first year at DC.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by people who have a genuine love for what they do and are motivated to be the best they can be.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.

In 2008, I started my own business – a small restaurant in rural Ireland, which has since changed hands and is still operating successfully today.

What makes a good teacher at Dubai College?

High expectations and an excellent subject knowledge.

A belief that every student can and should achieve their best and to have a sense of humour and ability to build warm relationships with all students.

To have fantastic communication skills and the ability to make learning accessible to all learners, regardless of their level.

What are you trying to encourage and instil into your students?

Resilience and a ‘growth mindset’. I like to help students I work with see that making mistakes is as important as getting it right, provided they learn along the way.

Work ethic- to understand the value of hard graft.

That we have rights, but we also have responsibilities. As part of a community we can add value, if we treat others well and look after each other as well as ourselves.

In your opinion, what makes Dubai College special?

DC only recruits the best teachers. The relationships between teachers and students are outstanding, and it feels like a family where each person is valued. The students are amazing and very respectful.

Who or what inspires you?

My parents inspired me, through their care, love, respect, values and manners which they instilled in me. They encouraged, supported and gave me praise, they are my inspiration and ensured that I was happy in my life, in whichever direction life takes me.

Tell us something not a lot of people know about you.

I am a very proud mother to 3 beautiful, amazing children, 2 daughters, 1 son and I have 3 adorable grandchildren.

Counselling Service

At Dubai College we have two fully qualified counsellors that bring a wealth of experience to the school. All therapy provided within the school will come from an evidenced based approach and students are able to access one to one sessions as well as group work. Psycho-educational talks will also be delivered across all year groups for both students and parents which will be based on the need for that particular year group.

Mark Samways

I have worked extensively with young people and in schools in the UK prior to moving to Dubai. I have a degree in Psychology from Loughborough University as well as a Masters in Addiction Psychology and Counselling. I am also a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. 

The counselling service at Dubai College offers confidential one to one support for both staff and students. My style of counselling is very much a person centred approach which means that I treat each case on its own merits and try and find what works best for the individual rather than starting with my own ideas and potentially trying to put square pegs in round holes. The individual’s needs are my absolute priority, and I appreciate that no two cases are the same. I often find myself working out of a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) framework but also use Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness amongst other things.  If you have any queries with regard to the counselling service, please do not hesitate to contact me. 

Sandra Gorman

I am an experienced counsellor with over 13 years of experience in Ireland and the UAE. Working with wellness and illness in the area of mental health. I have worked with children, adolescents and adults in diverse multicultural populations with a wide range of complex psychosocial issues. 

My key qualifications include a Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Ireland), a Masters in Child and Adolescent Studies (Ireland) and a Masters in Psychology (UK).  I am an accredited member with the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. 

I provide a holistic approach with my clients using a Humanistic Young Person Therapy that provides respect, a safe environment, empathy and the opportunity for them to discover and be themselves. I also incorporate Positive Psychology (PP), Mindfulness, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I remain knowledgeable about current research in my field, which also informs my practice. 

My overarching goal is to help my clients feel empowered. I help them to build their resilience in order to embrace the challenges that come their way and ultimately to live a happy fulfilling life. Each person is unique and has their own story – that is where I meet them at and go on the journey with them.

What makes a good teacher at Dubai College?

Teaching starts with a passion for a subject matter as well as a passion for learning and educating. When this passion and enthusiasm enters a classroom it inspires young minds to explore the subject and look beyond what is being taught in the classroom to enhance their knowledge and understanding. Teaching is definitely an art form that turns the complicated and unknown into the understandable and memorable. It’s not a skill that everyone has but something you see every day in Dubai College.

What are you trying to encourage and instil in your students?

What we try and encourage and instil in the students is a greater sense of self and identity. During secondary school students will go through huge changes and we are there to support them along the way. We try and explore their values and how they shape who they are and who they want to be.

In your opinion, what makes Dubai College special?

Having recently joined Dubai College, it’s clear to see the rapport between staff and students. There is a lot of trust and mutual respect which makes the school a happy place to be. There are so many opportunities at the school to get involved in both inside and outside the classroom which allows the students to have some amazing experiences.

Who or what inspires you?

People inspire me. There’s not one particular person, nor do they have to be famous in any way but people that dare to dream and take on difficult and tasking challenges. The outcome isn’t important, but the fact that they are brave enough to put themselves out there really inspires me to push myself and see what I am capable of.
