Absences

Parents are asked to telephone the school nurse between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on the morning of the absence and to provide a note when the pupil returns to school. If parents are going to be out of the country, it is essential that they advise the school office of their child’s temporary guardian and contact numbers in case of an emergency.

Holiday and Other Absences
Parents are asked to avoid arranging holidays during term time. There may be other unavoidable reasons for a pupil to be absent from school apart from illness, and we ask parents to notify us of these once they are known.

Public Holidays
There are, during the year, closures of the school whose exact dates cannot be predicted, i.e. some Islamic holidays or periods of mourning. Please check with the local newspapers and radio. When the Government declares "the public sector will be closed" all schools must, by law, remain closed, and there will be no school on these days.

Late Arrivals
When pupils are late to school, they should first report to the school nurse before going to their lessons.

Late Collection of Pupils
For reasons of safety and comfort, pupils are not allowed to wait outside the school beyond a ten minute collection period. They should then go to the school office reception area to wait, from where parents or drivers may collect them.

Early Departure
Pupils needing to leave school early for medical or dental appointments, music examinations, etc. MUST
provide a letter of notification
report to the school nurse at departure time
be collected from the school office reception area by a parent (or their representative)

Lunch Break: Food and Drink
Pupils may bring a packed lunch to school or purchase a lunch from the school canteen. A limited range of snacks and drinks are sold from the kiosk, which is open during morning break and lunch time. The school canteen is open during break and lunch. A range of meals can be purchased on a cash basis.

Eating and drinking on buses is not allowed. At morning break and lunch time, pupils may eat or drink outside or in their form rooms whilst seated, not when moving around.

Chewing Gum and Smoking are forbidden.

The School Nurse
The school nurse is responsible for coordinating with parents, the school doctor and the Ministry of Health regarding immunisations and physical examinations.  First aid and initial nursing care is administered to pupils in case of accident or illness.  In case of accident requiring hospital treatment, parents will be contacted and asked to make any necessary arrangements.  In case of illness, pupils should come to the nurse, who will assess their fitness to be at school.  The nurse may then contact parents to arrange for the pupil to be collected from school.  It is preferred not to send an ill pupil home alone in a taxi.  Parents are asked not to send an ill child to school.

The nurse will provide follow up for pupils with special medical concerns.  Basic over-the-counter medication can be supplied to pupils with parental approval by telephone.  Any other medication requiring dispensation during school hours must be brought to the nurse, where parents will then be asked to sign a medical release form.

For your child’s welfare it is essential every pupil’s information be kept up to date.  Should address, telephone, emergency numbers, medical or immunisation information change, parents are required to immediately submit this to the office in writing or by e-mail.  Information Update forms are available to pupils from a rack outside the library doors.   All medical information is treated as confidential.  Parents are welcome to contact the nurse with any medical concerns regarding their child.

Medical Examinations
The Ministry of Health requires all new pupils and those in Years 7, 9, 11 and 13, to undergo medical examinations.  There is a fee of Dhs. 150 for Year 7 and new pupils, which will cover the cost for all future medicals while in attendance at Dubai College.  Dr. Srebrina Apostolova M.D., our school doctor, conducts these examinations on Monday mornings with the nurse.

Car Parking
Parents should be aware that there is major congestion around Dubai College at the moment due to various long term construction projects. Please allow extra time for your journey. Two car parks are available for use: The parking area in front of the Main Hall with access directly from Al Sufouh Road and the side car park near the Design and Technology Centre with access from Road 331. Safety is of paramount importance when pupils are entering or leaving school premises. Members of staff are on duty in the car parks, so please follow their guidance at all times. On occasions, you may be asked to wait in a queue for safety reasons. Please do park your vehicle in the areas provided rather than stopping elsewhere and blocking the flow of traffic. We thank you in advance for your co-operation in this important matter.

Buses
The school’s buses pick up/drop off at designated stops in the following areas:
Dubai, Deira, Jebel Ali, Emirates Hills, The Lakes, Al Barsha, Sharjah, Garhoud and  Rashidiya.  Buses operate to Mirdif afternoons only if required.

For pupils involved in after-school activities, late buses leave at 4:45 p.m., following a limited stop service to :
Beach Road, Al Wasl Road, Defence Roundabout, Trade Centre Apartments, Gold and Silver Sands*, ‘The One’*, Al Ghurair Centre*, Wafi City, Garhoud and Al Mulla Plaza*
(*subject to demand)

Pupils who use the bus must carry their bus pass as they will be required to show it upon request. Pupils who are not regular bus users and who travel on the late bus will be asked to pay Dhs. 10. This also applies to those who make occasional use of the regular bus service. There is a Dhs. 10 fee for a lost / replacement bus pass.
