Economics

The focus in the Economics department is not just on achieving outstanding academic results. We want students to enjoy Economics and Business Studies as well as to practise and improve on their interpersonal and ‘soft’ skills. We attempt to bring the subject alive by constantly examining current events which seem to increasingly dominate our lives. We actively encourage students to ask questions and seek out further information. Lessons in the department end develop into whole group discussions if the students wish to examine recent economic news.

Course Outline at Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, our students follow the iGCSE syllabus as this is more appropriate to our students here at Dubai College. In Year 10, we primarily look at microeconomics: the mechanics of the market mechanism, including the labour market and the potential role of the market in solving the economic problem of scarcity. We then develop this to look at the supply side of the economy: firms, production and levels of competition.

In Year 11, the focus shifts to macroeconomics. The first term examines a country’s macroeconomic objectives and policies and the second term develops these in terms of the global economy: international trade, globalisation and exchange rates.

The A Level Economics course follows develops the knowledge and skills of the iGCSE course. However, iGCSE Economics is not a prerequisite for study at A Level.
