Guide for parents

Our Aim is to provide an outline of the school so that prospective parents and students alike can gain a better appreciation and understanding of what Dubai College is really like.

The Daily Routine

Pupils should arrive at school between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m.

Timing of the Day
By 7:50 a.m. pupils should be in form rooms for registration.

Sunday - Wednesday 7:50 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.
Morning break is from 9:45 a.m. to 10:10 a.m.
Lunch break is from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Thursday 7:50 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Morning break is from 10:40 a.m. to 11:05 a.m.

Absences
Parents are asked to telephone the school office between 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the absence and to provide a note when the pupil returns to school. If parents are going to be out of the country, it is essential that they advise the School Office of their child’s temporary guardian and contact numbers in case of an emergency.

Uniform and Equipment

The aim is for pupils to present a neat appearance without being obtrusive, fashionable or competitive in what they wear, or the way in which the uniform is worn. Form teachers are responsible for checking during morning and afternoon registration that pupils are well presented. Where they are not, pupils will be asked for an explanation and sent to the Head of Section who will contact parents, if necessary.

Co-Curricular Activities
There are many opportunities during lunchtime and after school for involvement in a comprehensive programme of activities. Sporting, practical and academic interests are all catered for and we consider the co-curricular programme to be a key aspect of the ‘learning for life’ process. Whilst not compulsory, pupils are strongly encouraged to take up at least one activity which often leads to House and/or school representation at competitive levels. Lists are sent home at the beginning of each year for information as activities change from term to term and from year to year depending upon demand. Pupils are asked to suggest new ones that would be of interest to them; if a viable group can be formed and a leader found, the activity will go ahead.
Activities take place during the lunch hour or after school. After school activities commence at 3.30 p.m., finishing at 4.30 p.m. in time for pupils to use the ‘late bus’ that leaves at 4.45 p.m. If an activity cannot be held and is cancelled, details will be posted on the notice board outside the School office. It is the responsibility of the pupil then to contact parents or driver to make alternate transportation arrangements as necessary.

Viewing the School

Parents who wish to visit can contact the school to book an appointment. It is advised to book well in advance.

Transport

Pupils come from a wide area, and a fleet of air-conditioned buses provides transport to and from all parts of Dubai and the neighbouring emirate of Sharjah. The bus fee is a ‘flat rate’ regardless of distance. It should be stressed that this is not a door-to-door service; setting down and picking up points are determined by the number of users in a particular location.

Private Music Lessons

Private music lessons in a range of instruments are available to all pupils, provided by a number of peripatetic teachers. The school is a centre for the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music examinations, and an annual visit by an ABRSM examiner enables pupils to take Grades I – VIII and the LRSM qualification in the practice and theory of music.

Health

The school’s nursing staff will provide treatment to pupils who suffer minor injuries or who are taken ill during the school day. When pupils require further treatment or are unable to continue at school, parents will be contacted.

Ministry of Health regulations require that all pupils undergo medical examinations. These are carried out on school entry and in Years 9, 11 and 13 by the School Doctor. There will be a once only charge of Dhs 300 towards the cost of all medicals.
