Mathematics

At the very heart of our teaching and learning in mathematics is a sense of fun. Within a well resourced department, staffed by highly qualified and talented teachers students at every level are encouraged to develop through a wide range of teaching strategies that range from teacher exposition to investigational work and the use of ICT.

Central to our success is the focus placed upon the student / teacher relationship where an enjoyment and fascination with the subject is developed. Students are motivated to derive a sense of satisfaction through personal achievement and are encouraged to recognize the power and relevance of mathematics. Beyond the curriculum mathematics enjoys popularity within the College community as shown by our annual Mathematics Olympiad competition in which students, parents and staff participate. This has been a very successful event.

Success is celebrated at every level.  In the early stages of Key Stage 3 mathematics can often be a daunting subject for some thus the building of self confidence is a primary consideration.  Throughout students engage in a structured programme supported by the use of ICT and a variety of fun activities that help maintain an atmosphere of enjoyment and a culture of success. Attainment levels are constantly monitored to ensure the appropriate support is offered across the whole ability range. Individual targets are set that are both realistic and challenging.

At GCSE the focus is upon the preparation of students to ensure they achieve their full potential in public examinations. However, the prescriptive nature of the curriculum is ‘spiced up’ with creative and inventive additions to the programme of work.

AS and A Level Mathematics and Further mathematics is a very popular choice in Years 12 and 13 and the same culture of enjoyment applies. Students and are offered an extensive and full range of qualifications depending on their mathematical ability. Results are outstanding and students often go on to study mathematics related courses at university.
