Course Outline
With the important advances in Biotechnology, medicine and the increasing awareness of human effects on the environment, the study of Biology has become even more relevant to today's society.  The course offered considers these and other aspects of the subjects at a personal, social, environmental, economic and technological level.

Students are able to repeat each unit test once during the course.  This should help to reduce the pressure on the 'A' Level candidates in their final June examinations.  Throughout the course there is great emphasis on practical work, both in the laboratory and in the field.

In order to fully develop the student's understanding of fieldwork in Biology, 'AS' and 'A' Level students are expected to attend a week's field course (in conjunction with the Geography students) which usually takes place in Cyprus during the second term of Year 12.  The cost of this fieldtrip is normally around 3,500dhs, which covers flights, accommodation, food, insurance and transport costs.  This cost is to be borne by the parents.

Career Prospects
Career prospects are varied and to a certain extent depend on the accompanying 'AS' and 'A' Levels.  A combination of Biology and Chemistry is desirable (and indeed in some cases essential) for careers in Medicine and Dentistry.  The same combination also lends itself to careers in Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Physiology and Forensic Science.  A combination of Geography and Biology lends itself to careers in Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Ecology, Forestry and Town and Country Planning.  Many students also find the relevance of Biology to everyday life makes it a more 'digestible' Science.  For these, students, therefore, Biology is an obvious choice, as the inclusion of a Science in their 'A' or 'AS' Level choices will help to widen their possible career choices.
