ART AND DESIGN

EDEXCEL,     Specification 8030 'AS'
                   Specification 9030 'A2'

The best foundation for success in 'AS' and 'A' Level Art is a good grade at G.C.S.E. Students should have an understanding of the basic formal elements of art – colour, tone, form, etc., and also some understanding of the place of art, craft and design in the world – its history and its purpose. Above all, students should have an interest in creating and understanding art and the determination to develop that interest.

Course Outline

The skills students will develop will be varied. A working knowledge of materials, practices and technology within art is needed. The ability to interpret and convey ideas and feelings using art, as well as the use of imaginative, creative, experimental, analytical and documenting skills are needed. Students will also develop a specialist vocabulary and the knowledge of the place of art in history and contemporary society. The ability to summarise information from various sources, use accurate and relevant information, produce written work that is legible and clear and the choice of suitable images to illustrate ideas are essential skills. Also appropriate to this course is the use of Information Technology, the ability to work with others and problem solving techniques.

Career Prospects
There are many careers in art, craft and design. Most require further study at an art school, further education college or university. Possibilities include Fine Art, Advertising, Television, Photography, Fashion and Interior Design, Teaching, Product Design, Magazine Layout, Jewellery, Weaving and Textile Design, Print Making and Illustration, Ceramics, Video Production, Computer Graphics, Architecture, Furniture Design, Make-Up Artists for television and film, and many others. Art is, of course, also accepted for the majority of University courses in the same way as any other 'A' Level, and the particular problem solving and research skills which students will have acquired over the two year 'A' Level Art course should prove useful no matter what course the student may eventually choose to follow.
